Lake Las Vegas Struggling In Economy

Lake Las Vegas was created as a wealthy resort and community 17 miles from the famous Las Vegas strip. For visitors look for a Las Vegas casino not so nestled in the hustle and bustle, Lake Las Vegas was meant to give a quiet, serene place to stay, with the convenience of gambling in the big casinos during late hours.

But the economy has not fared well for this tropical paradise. Upscale and bankrupt, Casino MonteLago was one of the seemingly last places for visitors to stay; unfortunately, on March 14th, they will also close and eliminate 177 jobs. The Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas is impending shutdown in May.

Last Tuesday, employees were notified of the closure. Federal law will allow these employees to receive 60 days pay despite their jobs ending in four weeks.

Casino MonteLago opened in 2003, just before the economy took a spiraling crash. They were originally owned by an Alaskan Indian tribe and almost faced closure in 2007. While the ownership passed on in an effort to save the casino, the loss of the Ritz-Carlton hotel has visitors to Lake Las Vegas few and far between.

“It’s time people start staying at other Las Vegas casinos and resorts for their visits to the strip,” Las Vegas reporter Nellie Frank says.

Ritz-Carlton’s closure will cause the loss of an additional 350 jobs. The second hotel, 493-room Loews Lake Las Vegas, doesn’t plan to throw in the towel. The hotel claims to have better booking rates than the previous year.

With the immense amount of bankruptcies and closures, Lake Las Vegas is facing $700 million in liabilities. While the community has 1,700 residences, they do not have a grocery store, and the nearest schools are up in the working-class neighborhood of Henderson.
